Review by drmarkb: Two games for the price of one, neither especially good. Everything is working very well. A pleasant surprise is the Windows Phone App for Mac is also working perfectly connecting to Windows Phone 10 OS on my Lumia 640. The app did notice that the phone's files were reformatted, and suggested to click ok to ensure the phone and the Mac would always now be in sync. The Hungry Horace character first appeared in a self titled Pac-Man clone before going on to feature in three indirect sequels.
Horace Goes Skiing was released in 1982 for Spectrum and Commodore 64. Whilst not a direct sequel, it does continue one theme from the first game, liberally borrowing the mechanics of another famous gaming franchise. In this case it is Frogger, that classic Konami coin op game that saw you tasked with guiding a frog across a busy road and river to get back home.
Here, Horace is trying to make his way to the shop to buy some skis. In the first of two levels, you must guide him Frogger-style from the top of the screen to the bottom, crossing a busy road packed with bikes, cars and heavy duty lorries. Once on the other side, enter the shop to make your purchase then safely guide him back up to the top. Make it in one piece and you get to take Horace skiing.
The Frogger level is a beast. Unlike in the arcade original, in which your frog would make single jumps before stopping, this carries on the Pac-Man theme in that your man will keep moving in whichever direction you have set him off in until you point him somewhere else. Not a problem in and of itself once you get used to it but combined with some relentless traffic, including a vindictive ambulance driver, it makes for a challenging crossing.
Speaking of the ambulance driver, Horace starts the game with $40 in his pocket but each time he gets squished he has to pay $10 for the ambulance to take him to hospital. Which I guess goes someway to explaining the paramedic’s dangerous driving. There is no timer for getting across although linger too long and you risk the road becoming more congested. Successful trips earn you points which in turn can earn you more money.
Get back safely and the second part of the game sees you take to the slopes, a fun little downhill challenge where you slalom Horace down the course navigating jumps, steering through gates and more often than not face planting into trees. Control is fairly simple, Horace moving continuously, a stab left or right guiding him round the course. Collision detection is a little iffy. Flag gates are often positioned just after a tree and so you line up the angle of your descent, position Horace to skim the branches and pass through the first gate only to find that he has instead smashed straight into the tree despite appearing to be some distance away. Annoyingly missing a gate causes the game to momentarily freeze and emit a hideous beep, the ignominy of missing the point generating flags compounded by an all out assault on your ear drums. Still, you get a couple of attempts before you see the game over screen, Horace’s skis being able to withstand a couple of heavy impacts before they are broken for good.

If you manage to guide him all the way down, aim for the finish gate for bonus points. It’s then rinse and repeat as you head back to the ski shop to guide Horace back over the road for another crack at the slopes.
It’s all fairly simple stuff once you get the hang of it. Graphically it is basic with the usual limited palette look of the majority of Spectrum games. Horace himself is a strange looking fellow, rather conjuring an image of Humpty Dumpty waddling across the road but somehow all the more endearing because of it.

With just two levels that are quickly mastered, this won’t last you long. Fun but limited.
